Can AI Help Us Investigate the Purpose of Life?

We are building increasingly sophisticated AI systems to improve software development.

Large language models. Coding harnesses. Agentic loops. Evals. Optimization. Hill-climbing. Self-improvement.

The objective is clear: build systems that can solve increasingly difficult problems.

But what happens if we point the same machinery at one of humanity’s oldest questions:

What is the purpose of life?

This is not about simply asking an LLM, “What is the purpose of life?”

The interesting question is whether we can build a systematic research harness around it.

Give it competing philosophical ideas. Let it examine arguments, challenge assumptions, identify contradictions, explore evidence, generate alternative explanations, and continuously refine its conclusions.

In other words:

Hypothesize → Test → Critique → Evaluate → Improve → Repeat.

There are already experiments moving in this direction.

One example is DeepReason, built using Fable 5. It uses a Popperian approach to difficult “why” questions, generating competing explanations, subjecting them to criticism, and examining which ideas survive.

That is fascinating.

But it does not quite address the question we are asking.

Has anyone built such a system specifically to investigate the purpose of life?

Not an LLM generating a philosophical answer.

Not a chatbot having a conversation about meaning.

But a systematic, iterative research process using the new AI stack to investigate the question itself.

We are investing enormous intellectual effort in teaching machines how to find better answers in software.

Perhaps one of the most interesting experiments would be to ask them to help us find better answers about why we are here in the first place.

The next frontier may not be better code. It may be better questions.
