Can LLMs Help Us Explore the Purpose of Life?

Large Language Models are being used to transform software development.

We are building coding harnesses to improve strategy, training, measurement, valuation, economics, productivity, and almost every other dimension of software engineering.

But there is a much bigger question.

Can we use the same technology to explore the purpose of life?

For centuries, philosophers have asked questions about meaning, existence, consciousness, morality, and purpose. These questions have no simple benchmarks and no obvious optimization function.

LLMs introduce a new possibility.

Instead of using AI only to build software, we can use it as a thinking partner. We can ask it to examine philosophical arguments, challenge assumptions, compare competing ideas, identify contradictions, and explore questions that humans have debated for centuries.

Coding harnesses make this even more interesting.

A harness can structure a process where an LLM generates an argument, critiques it, tests alternative perspectives, and iterates. The objective is no longer simply to produce better code.

It is to produce better questions and deeper thinking.

Perhaps this is one of the more interesting frontiers of AI.

We have spent enormous effort asking:

“How can AI help us do more?”

Maybe we should also ask:

“Can AI help us understand why we are doing it?”

That may be a very different kind of AI research.
